Whittier Cruise Port Guide

Whittier Cruise Port:
Which Dock, How the Tunnel Works, and How to Get There from Anchorage

Whittier is approximately 60 miles southeast of Anchorage, about an hour and a half without stops, plus the tunnel. The only road in is a one-lane tunnel shared with the train, with traffic running one direction at a time. Plan your journey around both the tunnel and your cruise line's boarding deadline.

The tunnel, explained

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is 2.5 miles long, one lane wide, and shared by cars and the Alaska Railroad. Traffic goes one direction at a time, in approximately 15-minute openings every half hour. Trains have priority and can delay an opening.
