Your Five Days

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Anchorage

    Transfer time varies by flight

Your guide meets you at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and drives you downtown to check in. Most flights land late, and we'd rather you start Day 2 rested than marched around a city in the dark. Land early? Downtown is walkable and the Anchorage Museum is four blocks from the hotel - ask your guide where to eat; they live here.

  2. Day 2

    Glacier & Wildlife Adventure

VIP pickup 8:30 AM · Return 4:00 PM · Lunch included

South along Turnagain Arm - in winter, plates of tidal ice you can hear grinding from the pullouts. Then the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center: moose, wood bison, musk ox, caribou, wolves, lynx, and bald eagles (the bears are denned up - they hibernate, and we won't pretend otherwise). Finish with the Alyeska Aerial Tram, 2,300 vertical feet into the Chugach, and lunch in Girdwood at a restaurant we actually eat at.

  3. Day 3

    Dog Sledding in Willow

VIP pickup 9:00–9:30 AM · Return 6:00 PM · Lunch included

North to Willow, the heart of mushing country and the Iditarod restart town - and if the sky is clear, we stop for Denali. At the kennel: a training run, a lesson on the runners, then two guests to a traditional sled and a team of Alaskan huskies for roughly six miles. You're driving, not riding. Afterward, time with the dogs - which is what most guests talk about on the drive home. Hot drinks and lunch at the kennel.

  4. Day 4

    Choose Your Day

Three options · Pick one when you inquire

    Option A

    Matanuska Glacier

    Pickup 8:00–8:30 am · Return 5:30 pm · Lunch included · Moderate

The largest glacier in North America you can drive to and walk on - 27 miles long, four miles wide. Winter is when it's at its best: the meltwater plumbing freezes solid, opening features that are genuinely off-limits in July, and the low sun makes the blue read deeper. Guided walk in provided traction gear; lunch at a lodge overlooking the glacier.

    Option B

    Snowmobile Backcountry Day

Pickup 8:00–8:30 am · Return 5:30 pm · Lunch included · No experience needed

There is country in Alaska you cannot reach in winter on wheels or on foot - this is how you get there. Instruction and safety come before anyone starts an engine, and the pace is set by the least experienced rider, not the most.

    Option C

    Northern Lights Night

Day at leisure · VIP pickup 9:00 pm · Return by 3:00 am

Your day is your own - then after dark we drive away from the city lights, with the location chosen that night based on that night's forecast, not a fixed spot on a schedule. Any operator who guarantees you the northern lights is selling something. What we provide is a guide watching the forecast, a warm vehicle to wait in, and help getting your camera set up.

Want more than one? Any option you don't choose can be added to your trip - and if the aurora forecast is strong on a night you're already here, tell your guide. We have our own vehicles and eleven guests, which means we can move.

  5. Day 5

    Departure

VIP airport transfer · Late check-out

Breakfast, a late check-out, and your VIP transfer to the airport when your flight says so. Long layover before an evening flight? Tell us - there are things worth doing with a spare Anchorage afternoon, and we'll arrange it.

Wildlife on the road is never guaranteed. Winter is the best moose season along Turnagain Arm, but we won't promise you an animal - what we promise is a guide who knows where to look and a group small enough to stop when we find one.

Why more than one night?

The aurora needs darkness, clear skies, and geomagnetic activity on the same night. One night is one roll of the dice. Three nights is three, and the difference is not small.

That's the honest case for a multi-day winter trip, and it's the same reason we won't sell you a single aurora night and imply it's likely. More nights, better odds. Nobody can do better than that, and anyone who says they can is selling.

What can a multi-day winter trip include?

Aurora on Multiple Nights

From genuinely dark locations chosen for that night's forecast, not a fixed spot on a schedule.

Dog Sledding

A working Iditarod kennel in Willow. A real ride behind a real team, not a demo loop.

Matanuska Glacier

At its best in winter: the meltwater freezes solid, and the blue reads deeper in low light.

Snowmobile or ATV Days

Backcountry that has no other winter access.

The Drives Themselves

Turnagain Arm in winter and the Glenn Highway north are worth the trip on their own.

Time to Not Rush

With more than one day, there's no reason to hurry any of it.

Most trips run three to five days out of Anchorage, with overnights arranged for you and driving distances kept sensible for winter roads. Tell us your dates and we will build the route around them.

What does it cost?

A couple chasing aurora for three nights and a family of six mixing dog sledding with glacier days are not the same trip, and one price for both would be a fiction.

For a reference point before you call

  • Our private winter day tours - $697 to $1,397 for two guests per day
  • Comparable multi-day packages in this market - roughly $775 to $1,050 per person for two- to three-day activity packages with lodging
  • Premium week-long escorted trips in this market - $2,500 to $3,600 per person

We'll tell you where your trip lands before you commit to anything.

Is Anchorage the right base for an aurora trip?

If the northern lights are the entire reason for your trip, the honest answer is that Fairbanks sits directly under the auroral oval and Anchorage does not - and we'd tell you to build the trip around Fairbanks, even though that isn't where we operate. If the aurora is one of several reasons you're coming, Anchorage is a genuinely good base: glaciers, mountains, wildlife, dog sledding, and real aurora chances.

Tell us about your trip.

Three things: your dates, who's coming, and the one experience you refuse to go home without. You'll get a real itinerary with a real price - and if we think a different operator or a different part of Alaska serves your trip better, we'll say so.
