Cruise Transfer Guide

Cruise Line Transfer vs. Alaska Railroad vs. Independent Tour:
Which Should You Book to Get to Your Ship?

I run an independent transfer company, so you'd expect me to tell you to book with us. Here's the honest version instead. There are three good ways to get between Anchorage and the Whittier or Seward cruise docks, and which one is right depends on two things: when your ship leaves and how much risk you're willing to carry yourself. If your connection is tight, book the cruise line's transfer. If you have the evening sailing and a night in Anchorage, read on — because you're about to spend four to six hours on the best road in Alaska either way, and the question is whether you see it through a bus window or get out and stand in it.

The one rule: who's responsible if you're late

When you ride the cruise line's bus or charter train, the ship is responsible for you. If their vehicle breaks down, the ship waits or the line gets you to the next port at their expense. When you book the railroad, a rental car, or any independent company — including mine — that responsibility is yours. We plan every transfer around your ship's boarding deadline, and we track flights and arrivals. But I won't pretend the risk is identical, because it isn't. That's why the table below says "cruise line" in the tight-connection row, and I'm fine with that.

When to book the cruise line's transfer

  • You fly into Anchorage the same day you sail.
  • Your all-aboard is before early afternoon.
  • You want zero personal risk and are fine arriving early and waiting.
  • You booked a cruisetour and the land portion already includes it.

When to take the Alaska Railroad

  • You're sailing in the early afternoon and want scenery for a fraction of the price of a tour.
  • You're a rail person. The Coastal Classic is one of the great train rides in North America, and I'll say that as a competitor.
  • You're coming off the ship with a free day in Seward or Whittier first; the return trains leave in the early evening — 6 p.m. from Seward.

The caveats: it runs mid-May to mid-September only, the Seward train leaves Anchorage at 6:45 a.m., and you wait at the terminal from late morning.

When to book an independent transfer tour

  • Your ship leaves in the evening and you're in Anchorage the night before.
  • You'd rather spend the day at the Wildlife Conservation Center and Byron Glacier than in a terminal.
  • You're coming off the ship with a flight late enough to allow it.
  • You want eleven people in a van instead of fifty on a coach, and a guide who lives here.

And when to book private instead: early sailing, big group, lots of luggage, mobility needs that want a vehicle to yourselves, or you just want to go straight through.

What it costs, honestly

A couple on our Seward transfer tour pays $494 plus gratuity and lunch. The same couple on the Coastal Classic pays $266 in Adventure class. On the cruise line's bus, whatever the line charges — check your cruise documents. The tour costs more because it is a day tour that ends at a pier, not a ride; if a ride is all you need, the train is excellent and I'd take it.

Questions people ask me about this

Can I take the train one way and a tour the other?

Yes, and plenty of people do. Train down the morning you sail if it's early; our tour back off the ship.

Do you pick up at the airport?

Yes, for private transfers and by arrangement on the tour. Tell us your flight.
